NASHVILLE --- Larry Rea, host of the award-winning Outdoors with Larry Rea on ESPN-790 and editor of the Mid-South Hunting & Fishing magazine, received the Wade Bourne Outdoor Communicator of the Year award during the 17th Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame banquet on Saturday, Aug. 26.
The first-year award honors the memory of late noted outdoors communicator Wade Bourne, whose wife, Becky, and son, Hampton, attended the awards ceremony onboard the General Jackson Showboat/Music City Queen.
Rea, whose radio show recently celebrated its 16th anniversary, is the retired outdoors editor of The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis. He continues to write a weekly Sunday outdoors column in The CA where he worked for almost 34 years before retiring in January 2001. He has been the editor of the Mid-South Hunting & Fishing News since September 2016.
During his acceptance speech Rea, who lives in Germantown, credited Bourne with helping to “jump-start” his outdoors writing career in 1988. “Wade was always there when I needed him for advice,” Rea, 74, said. “He was a one-of-a-kind outdoorsman, a man who had a passion for the outdoors, his family and his faith. It is an honor to receive this award.”
